Pascuales – Colima, Mexico. August 6th 2013.
After an amazing overall performance Portuguese talent Nic Von Rupp takes down some of the worlds best tube riders to become the champion of the first Pawa Tube Fest.
“It has been a really tough week and I am so stoked to come out as the winner. Coming here to surf one of the best waves in the World with some of the best tube riders has been an amazing experience. I want to thank everyone who made this event possible” (Nic Von Rupp, Portugal)
Superstar tube riders such as Nathan Hedge (Australia), Aritz Aramburu (Basque Country, Spain), Gabriel Villaran (Peru), Kalani Chapman (Hawaii), Brian Conley and Rusty Long (California) and many others, gathered in the legendary spot of Pascuales – Mexico to catch some of the best barrels of the season.
The event introduces a new format for tube riding where the final results are accumulated from the athlete’s over all heat performances, all counting from and towards their individual heat totals and round totals, event tally and ranking, qualification and final placing. The event champion and final placing are determined by the athlete’s best 10 scores accumulated from each heat throughout the event.
The first day was held in waves ranging from 10 – 12 ft with a solid SSW swell and side on winds which made for challenging and difficult conditions for all of the competitors.
During Round 1, Brian Conley (California) took the highest heat score total of the day followed by Peruvian charger Gabriel Villaran. The highest single wave score went to local talent Marcos “Chivito” Hootman (the youngest competitor in the event at just 17 years old) showing everyone that he is ready to compete with the best, and Australian legend Nathan Hedge with the second highest single wave score.
Some powerful tubes and gnarly wipe outs were constantly delivered through out the day with
Sebastian “Toto” de Romana suffering the worst wipe out of the event without any injury.
“Conditions were very challenging but there were some big tubes out there. That was so much fun!” (Sebastian De Romana, Peru)
Round 2 was run on Thursday with waves in the 6 to 8 ft range giving the athletes the opportunity to surf some of the best barrels seen in the contest. Basque legend Artitz Aramburu obtained the highest heat score total with a couple of clean deep tube rides to ensuring him a spot in the Semi Finals.
“After a few days without good waves, we finally saw the real Pascuales. I love this place and I will always come back!” (Aritz Aramburu, Basque Country)
Unfortunately after only an hour and twenty minutes of competition an unpredictable wind squall came from the West Pacific changing the surf conditions rapidly and the event was called off.
“It’s really difficult to forecast Pascuales” says Contest Director Carlos Hernandez “This wave is under the influence of so many elements and factors that it becomes very hard to predict.
We would like to thank the Magicseaweed team for their forecasting support. It has been really important for the event”.
In Round 2 Heat 3, Puerto Rican Alejandro Moreda picked the best barrel of the morning scoring a 7.33.Then after more than twenty minutes, with no waves being caught, the event was put on hold. Right before a busting south wind picked up and made it impossible for the contest to continue, Rusty Long (California) and Nic Von Rupp (Portugal) dropped into some perfect A-frame barrels and came out clean, without points counting, both surfers had big smiles.
Saturday morning had light offshore winds with clear skies and 4 to 6 ft clean barrels.
In Round 2 Heat 4, Nic Von Rupp was in sync with the ocean and had the best tube rides of the day to score the highest heat total (16.93) with a 9 point ride as his highest single wave score.
“I just stuck to my plan and went for the good ones. That left was amazing. With conditions like that you could basically make it out of any barrel you wanted. It was pumping out there” (Nic Von Rupp, Portugal)
In Round 2 Heat 5, Brazilian competitor Diego Silva chose the best wave of the day going deeper and longer than anyone else and had the highest single tube ride in the event scoring a 9.5. The young Brazilian earned U$1000 cash for the best Tube Ride of the event.
During Semi Final 1 Artiz Aramburu (Basque Country) scored the highest single wave score (7.0) but lacked to get a second high score to qualify for the final.
During the Semi Final 2 Peruvian Gabriel Villaran found two of the most perfect tubes that qualified him into the final heat. The Peruvian charger had never surfed Pascuales before this event but seemed to have some kind of special connection with the wave.
“This is one of the best waves in the World. I am really honored to be here. The best thing about Pascuales is that you do not need a big swell. It’s always good. I will be very happy to come back next year!” (Gabriel Villaran, Peru)
The final heat delivered some of the greatest tube rides of the event with Gabriel Villaran opening up with a 7.83 and with a quick second wave score of 7.0 points.
Diego Silva picked the best left of the final with a highest single wave score of 8.83
On the very next set Nathan Hedge (Australia) and Nic Von Rupp (Portugal) split the peak with Nathan scoring a 7.3 on the right and Nic scoring a 8.33 on the left. Nic closed the final with a solid backside tube to score a 8.03 and clinch the championship.
“Congratulations to all the surfers. It was the first time running with this format and the surfers loved it. We need to improve in a few areas but it has been a great experience. Pascuales is definitely one of the best tube riding waves on the planet and I am sure it can become one of the most spectacular events out there” Wade Sharp (Head Judge)
“I have been coming to Pascuales for the past ten years and I always wanted to see an event down here. I want to thank the Pawa Team, the sponsors and all the locals involved for making it happen. I can’t wait to come back” Nills Schweizer (Florida)

Day 2 Round 2
It starts with perfect conditions the second Round of the Pawa Tube Fest 2013.
Waves in the 6 to 8 foot range give the opportunity to few athletes to surf some of the best barrels seen in the contest so far.
Spanish legend Artitz Aramburu gets the highest heat total score pulling couple of clean and deep rides. Marcos “Chivito” Hootman obtains the 2nd highest total score: the local talent now has high chances to qualify for the semi finals.
Unfortunately, the show doesn’t last long enough to finish the Round. After only an hour and twenty minutes of competition an unpredictable wind squall from the West Pacific shows up. Conditions quickly change and the event is called off.
